Abstract
A polymer consisting of units of the general formula <FORM:0916260/IV(a)/1> wherein Y is a divalent group containing a direct chain of at least 3 C atoms, and which may contain a S atom in the chain, X is -O- or -NH-, R1 and R2 are each an alkyl or aryl radical and M is Sn or Si, may be made by reacting together (a) an unsaturated derivative of terephthalic acid having the general formula <FORM:0916260/IV(a)/2> in which Y1 is an unsaturated group containing a chain of at least 3 C atoms with a single ethylenic double bond in the chain, and (b) a diorgano Sn or Si compound of the formula <FORM:0916260/IV(a)/3> in which each A is H or a mercapto group of the formula (CH2)n-SH, where n is a small number. The reaction can be effected in the presence or absence of polymerization catalysts and solvents, at temperatures ranging from room temperature to 200 DEG C. and at normal or super atmospheric pressures. In examples, polymers are obtained by reacting diallyl terephthalate with (1) diethyl tin dihydride, (2) diethylsilane, (4 to 7, 9, 12) diphenylsilane, (8) dimethyl-bis(mercaptopropyl)-silane, (10) methylphenylsilane, and (11) ethylphenyl silane; and (3) by reacting N,N1-diallyl terephthalic acid diamide with diethyl tin dihydride.
