Abstract
915,933. Electro-dialysis cells. AMERICAN MACHINE & FOUNDRY CO. July 20, 1961 [July 26, 1960], No. 26329/61. Class 41. An electro-dialysis cell is provided with an external reservoir which communicates with the electrode chamber of the cell through pipes at the top and bottom thereof, whereby an acid fluid in the reservoir circulates through the electrode chamber, and prevents precipitation of salts. A stack of anionic and cationic membranes 48A, 48K forming chambers 52C, 52D and 52C, Fig. 4, arranged alternately in the normal manner has a cathode chamber 77 opening at the top into an upwardly inclined pipe 35, and connected at the bottom to a pipe 36, both pipes leading to a reservoir 10 vented to the atmosphere through a pipe 11 and filter 12. The reservoir is filled with a solution 14 to a level higher than the top of the cathode chamber 77, whereby gas bubbles given off at the cathode rise through the tube 35 and circulate the solution, which may be an acid solution alone, or formed by water and a premoulded cake 25 of an acid substance, e.g. sodium bisulphate. This may also be in powdered form. The anode compartment may also be provided with a similar acid charged reservoir and the current reversed periodically.
