A surface drainage structure for preventing reverse flow of liquid therethrough comprises a cup or bowl-shaped drain body 10 at the upper end is a threaded inlet opening at 12, a junction member 13 with a threaded outlet opening at the lower end; a drain inlet fitting 16, threaded to engage the body 10 at 12 and rotatably adjustable thereat; a grating 21 supported within the upper end of the fitting 16; and a valve 30 threadably engaged with the interior of the fitting 16 as shown, to permit through flow of liquid into the body 10 but no reverse flow. In the form shown in Fig. 2 a strainer 20 is supported within the fitting 16, around the upper end of which is formed an angled ledge 19, spaced lugs 26 being formed on the strainer 20 to support it thereon. The strainer 20 comprises a perforated floor 22 from which extend bars 24, to join a top frame 25 with lugs 26. The grating 21 is preferably less in diameter than the interior of the upper end of the fitting 16 and through it passes a tie rod 28 engaging the strainer floor 22. The valve 30 comprises a passageway 32 having a horizontal upper end 33 receiving liquid and a lower end 34, angled to the end 33 and formed with a valve seat 36 for a hinged closure 37. The closure 37 is carried by a cranked rocker bar 38 mounted at one end above the seat 36 so that it swings, and is rotatably fastened to the other end of the bar 38 so that it can revolve freely during liquid flow. In a modification, Fig. 3, where the strainer is dispensed with the structure includes a collar 45, threaded on the inside and outside and thereby engaged by the inlet opening of the body 10 and the exterior of the inlet fitting 16. The centre of the opening in the collar 45 is offset to the central axis thereof for eccentric location of the fitting 16 in the body 10.
