Abstract
915,293. Phase detectors. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Sept. 25, 1959 [Sept. 30, 1958], No. 32688/59. Class 40 (5). A phase-detector for comparing the phases of a control signal 1 and a reference signal 9 is of the type in which the control signal is converted into two signals in antiphase and added to the reference signal in a transformer, the output of rectifiers 3, 6 charging up a condenser 12 in dependence on the relative phases of the signals. In order to prevent the charge on 12 leaking away due to the absence of the control signal, a capacitor 14 (or a voltage source) is included which functions as a voltage source to bias rectifiers 3, 6 to cut-off if the control signal ceases for a period determined by the time constant of circuit 14, 5, 8, a blocking capacitor 15 also being included to prevent leakage of charge through the source of reference oscillations. The capacitor 15 together with resistors 5, 8 form a circuit the time constant of which must be at least 5.10 greater than the period of the control signal. Capacitor 14 may be replaced by a capacitor in each rectifier branch and there may be four, instead of two rectifiers.
