914,819. Measuring electrically. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Sept. 18, 1961 [Sept. 12, 1960], No. 31338/60. Class 40 (1). Apparatus for producing an electric signal related to a distance between successive markings 2, 21 on a moving strip 1 (e.g. of paper) comprises two pick-ups 3, 4 (e.g. light-sensitive cells) each producing an output when influenced by a respective one of the markings, means 11 for obtaining an electric signal dependent upon the speed of the strip, means 15 for integrating the signal, electronic switches 12, 16 arranged in the input and output circuits of the integrator and controlled respectively by both pick-up outputs and by the output of the second pick-up, and means for resetting the integrator in response to the output from the second pick-up. The outputs from 3, 4 may be differentiated to produce short pulses corresponding to the leading edges of marks 2, 2<SP>1</SP>. A D.C. signal dependent on the strip speed is obtained from tachogenerator 11 (or a pulse generator) and is applied to integrator 15 when switch 12 is closed by marking 2 passing pick-up 3. The switch is opened when marking 2<SP>1</SP> passes pick-up 4, and simultaneously switch 16 is closed to pass the integrated signal to comparator 17 where it is compared with a reference voltage. Variations in distance 2, 2<SP>1</SP> are indicated at 18, and a manual or automatic correction may be made. The output from 4 is also applied through time delay unit 19 to reset integrator 15, or the negative pulse obtained by differentiating the trailing edge of the output pulse from 4 may be used for this purpose.
