Abstract

914,393. Filters in parallel; gravity-separation apparatus. HARMS. H. H. Sept. 13, 1961, No. 32788/61. Class 46. Machine-tool coolant enters, by a pipe 11, Fig. 1, a perforate pipe 14, Fig. 2, within a settling tank 10, and flows under a baffle 16 in a first compartment 15 into weir troughs 17, whence it flows into a second compartment 18. Solids from these compartments are removed at 45, Fig. 1, by scraping conveyers 22, 24, Fig. 2. Liquid is withdrawn from compartment 18 by a pump 55 at 51, Figs. 1 and 2, and is discharged to four filter casings 80 each having an inlet valve 71. Filtrate passes to a manifold 100 and returns to the machine tool 12 via a pressure relief valve 101. Each filter casing 80 contains a pleated cylindrical element through which liquid flows inwardly; an extra outlet 115 communicates with the outside of the element. For most of the time all the filters are filtering, but periodically and sequentially each is backwashed for a short period by means of a sequence controller housed at 180, Fig. 1, and driven by the conveyer-operating motor 47. The sequence controller governs a solenoidoperated valve, 175 for each filter which valve acts to admit compressed air from a line 200, Fig. 1, to one end of a cylinder 171, Fig. 2, thereby closing inlet valve 71 and opening a valve 121 in the extra outlet 115. Thereupon filtrate from manifold 100 backwashes the relevant filter; the residue and liquid discharge through valve 121 into a seepage tank 130 located within a third compartment 20 having a scraping conveyer 26, of the settling tank 10. Liquid from the seepage tank 130 seeps through a row of holes 132 at its base into compartment 20, and overflows thence at 21 into compartment 18 for settlement and return at 51 to the filters. The holes 132 are kept clean on the inside by a conveyer 150 (which also dumps settled solids at 150a) and have adjustable obturators on the outside. In Fig. 4 (not shown), only three filters are provided and the base of the seepage tank is triangular in elevation.
