Abstract
914,377. Securing tools on shafts. SKIL CORPORATION. Nov. 14, 1960 [Nov. 27, 1959], No. 38977/60. Class 80 (2). [Also in Groups I, XXIII and XXV] Hand tools, such as rotary or jig saws, orbital sanders or hedge trimmers, are adapted for fitting to an electric power-drill by the provision of an adapter plate 44 with recesses 47 which form a bayonet-type fastener with studs on the power drill and of splines 39 on the tool shaft which mate with a spline nut on the drill shaft. The recesses 47 may be key-hole slots outwardly of the central opening 46 for the drill shaft or may open into this opening 46 and have enlarged ends 50 for receiving the enlarged heads of the studs. The adapter plate is made of spring stock and has a pair of offset portions 53 which, when the drill is rotated relatively to the tool, draws them together and connects them frictionally. The reverse torque of the drill tends to retain the studs in the end portions 48 of the recesses 47 but one of the studs is positively locked by a spring member 55 which is flexed back as the stud is entered in the recess and then springs back as the stud reaches the end of the recess; a tab 58 permits the member 55 to be disengaged when removing the drill from the tool.
