[Also in Group XXX] In an hydraulically-actuated link of adjustable length, for connecting a cage of a mine hoist to a cable coupling so that the cage may be kept in register with the various levels of the mine without the necessity of re-rigging the cable when it stretches, a cylinder 17, Fig. 3, provided with an hydraulic fluid reservoir 19 containing a motor or hand-operated piston, plunger or diaphragm pump 20 and held in grooves 16a ... 16c at the lower end of a pair of parallel plates 13 pivoted at 15 to the cable coupling 6 guides a plunger 22 connected to a member 24 pivoted at 25 to a further pair of parallel plates 14 arranged at right-angles to the pair 14 and pivoted at 26 to the cage, so that operation of the pump varies the length of the link. In a modification, Figs. 4, 5, the parallel plates are replaced by forked members 13, 14, the hydraulic pressure-fluid is supplied through a connector 17a and the plunger 22 is normally retained by a spring 22a in the position shown, but when actuated abuts the member 24 which is pivoted at 25 to member 14 and guided by members 28a, 28b having cranked ends slidable between ends 29a, 29b of a groove formed in member 13 and in the space between the end 29a and the guiding members 28a, 28b are inserted stirrup-shaped shims 30 of various dimensions so that, when the hydraulic pressure is removed, the members 13, 14 maintain their lengthwise positions. The webs 30c of the shims are thinner than their arms 30a, so that they may be easily inserted and withdrawn, and a clip 31 hinged at 31a and screwed at 31b may be used to retain the shims in place.
