Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the general formula <FORM:0913898/IV (b)/1> where R is hydrogen, methyl, or ethoxycarbonyl. N-benzyl-cyclopropylamine may be obtained by hydrogenating N-benzylidenecyclopropylamine in a solvent, such as absolute alcohol, at room temperature in the presence of a palladium catalyst, and recovering the resultant product from the reaction mixture. N-benzyl-N-cyclopropyl-ethyl carbamate may be obtained by reacting the amine compound with ethyl chlorocarbonate in dry ether in the presence of triethylamine, and N-benzyl-N-methyl-cyclopropylamine may be obtained by refluxing a mixture of the ethyl carbamate compound with lithium aluminium hydride in dry ether. The reaction mixture is decomposed with water and filtered; the filtrate is concentrated and distilled under reduced pressure to obtain the product as a colourless oil. The N-benzylidene-cyclopropylamine used as starting material may be obtained by adding cyclopropylamine dropwise, with stirring and cooling, to benzaldehyde.
