Abstract

The invention comprises esters of phenylethylcarbinol of the general formula: <FORM:0913855/IV (b)/1> wherein R.CO is the acyl radical derived from stearic, palmitic, cinnamic, stearoylglycollic, palmitoylglycollic or phthalic acid or the monosodium phthaloyl radical, the preparation thereof by reacting an appropriate acid halide with phenyl-ethylcarbinol under substantially anhydrous conditions in the presence of an acid-neutralising agent such as pyridine or triethylamine. Pharmaceutical compositions having choleretic activity comprise the above esters of phenylethylcarbinol together with a carrier. They may be in the form of tablets, capsules or pearls or may be administered as a syrup.
