In a multi-stage feed water system having an integral drain cooling system in which hot water drained from a higher pressure heater is flashed into steam in a flash box 10, the flashedoff steam is condensed in a sealed section 8 of the next lower stage heater casing 1 which is at a pressure between that of the said two feed water-heaters, the condensate from this sealed section and water from the flash box 10 being discharged into the casing 1 and, together with condensate of bled steam entering the casing through an inlet 6, is drained off through a pipe 7 which may discharge into the flash box of a still lower pressure heater (Fig. 2, not shown), the feed water to be heated enters the heater via the inlet 3 and is passed through a conventional nest of tubes 5 which pass through the sealed section 8 before reaching the outlet 4. The condensate in the sealed section 8 is discharged into the casing 1 through the U- pipe 15 and orifice 16, the difference in level between the orifice 16 and the bottom of the sealed section 8 corresponds to the difference in pressure between the sealed section and the casing.
