Abstract

Fluorescence is completely eliminated from mineral oils by a process which consists in prepurifying the oil as far as possible by means of excess sulphuric acid or oleum and then blowing a gas which is inert to the oil through the prepurified oil at a temperature not in excess of 104 DEG C. and such that no oxidation of the hydrocarbons occurs, settling out precipitated impurities, and removing remaining impurities from the oil by a bleaching earth treatment which includes filtration. Inert gases mentioned are nitrogen and carbon dioxide. In the example the oil is a refined machine oil (5 to 6,5 E/50 DEG C.;S.G. 0,89 to 0,93), the acid treatment is carried out in two stages, first a double treatment with 95 to 96% sulphuric acid and then a double treatment with oelum 86%SO3), and the earth treatment is effected by stirring the oil with 3% of bleaching earth, settling, and filtering through a vacuum filter containing a 4 to 5 cm. thick layer of bleaching earth.
