Abstract

Condensed pyrylium chlorides are prepared by reacting an aromatic o-hydroxyaldehyde with a ketone (containing an a -methylene group) in presence of POCl3 and a hydroxylic organic solvent. In examples, 2-hydroxy-1-naphthaldehyde is reacted with (1) 4-methoxy-acetophenone in ethanol giving 2-(4-methoxyphenyl) - naphtho - (11 : 21-5 : 6)-pyrylium-(1 : 2)-chloride; (2) levulinic acid in ethyleneglycol monomethyl ether giving 2-(2-hydroxy-5 : 6-benzostyryl) - 3 - (acetic acid - 2 - methoxyethyl ester) - naphtho - (11 : 21-5 : 6) - pyrylium-(1 : 2)-chloride, and (3) benzylacetone giving 2-(2-hydroxy - 5 : 6 - benzostyryl)-3-benzylnaphtho-(11 : 21-5 : 6) -pyrylium-(1 : 2)-chloride.
