Abstract
<PICT:0913176/III/1> Aqueous solutions of organic solids, such as whey, are concentrated by passing the solution through an inverted U-tube heated in a steam-chamber 1, one upright portion 2 of the tube being connected to the feed-container 13, the rate at which heat is supplied to the solution and the length and diameter of the upright portion of the tube being such that the solution boils and is raised to the top and through the horizontal portion 3 of the tube by the lifting-action of the steam evolved from the solution. The concentration is completed in the downwardly-extending portion 4 of the tube; and the mixture of concentrated solution and steam enters separator 6, from which the concentrated liquid is withdrawn by pump 8. It is possible to further concentrate whey containing 55% by weight of dry substance to produce a bright yellow liquid containing 85% by weight of dry substance. This yellow liquid subsequently solidifies to a solid mass. The U-tube may be made of glass, and observation windows may be provided in the steam-chamber. The steam leaving the separator is condensed in condenser 10.
