A photographic silver halide emulsion layer or a water-permeable protective layer contains finely divided particles of a thermoplastic polycarbonate having a molecular weight of at least 10,000 as a matting agent. In addition to the polycarbonate the layers may contain paraffin oil and a polyvinyl ether. The polycarbonates may be those prepared according to any of Specifications 772,627, 808,485, 808,486, 808,487, 808,488, 808,489, 808,735 and 894,490.
