Abstract

911,865. Hot axle-box radiation detectors. SIEMENS & HALSKE A.G. Jan. 22, 1960 [Jan. 26, 1959], No. 2513/60. Class 40 (3). A device for detecting hot-running railway axle bearings or brakes is placed by the track and comprises a detector mounted in a totally enclosed housing. Radiation from the hot members is focused on to the detector, and the housing has air circulated about it. The temperature of the circulating air may be controlled to compensate for the speed of a passing train or for the effect of the air through which the train has passed prior to testing. The detector 6 receives the radiation via an optical system, e.g. the mirrors 3, 2, 5, 4. The radiation passes into the housing 9 through a window 11 and, when opened, through shutters 7, 8. Shutter 7 is opened only for the passage of each hot member, but shutter 8 is opened for the passage of the complete train. The shutter 7 and the interior of housing 9 are blackened, while the outer surface of shutter 8 is reflecting. Housing 9 is carried in a chamber 12 through which air is circulated and which is preferably doublewalled. The air is drawn in by a fan 16 via a pipe which has its inlet 18 at the same height as the train members to be tested. For compensating for the effects of solar radiation, or of wind or speed, on the temperature of the hot member in a certain distance travelled before the testing operation, and also for compensating for the ambient temperature of the measuring equipment, the air drawn into the chamber 12 is heated or cooled by a device 19.
