In a spigot and socket joint between lengths of guttering 1, 5, Fig. 3, particularly made of plastic material or between a length of guttering and a coupling member or gutter fitting, the spigot and the socket are clamped to one another by resilient means, such as a C-shaped clip 8, which permits limited relative longitudinal displacement of the spigot and socket. The spigot and socket are each formed with a pair of longitudinally spaced abutments facing one another, which in one embodiment are constituted by the ends 3, 4, Fig. 2, of slots 2 in the edges of the spigot end on the gutter length 1 and by external ribs 6, 7 on the socket end on the gutter length 5. Relative longitudinal displacement of the gutter lengths, in either direction, is limited by engagement of the clip 8 with opposed abutments 3, 6 and 4, 7, respectively. In another embodiment, Figs. 4-6 (not shown), slots such as 2 are formed in the socket as well as in the spigot to provide the abutments. In a further embodiment the separate clip 8 is replaced by inwardly turned resilient lugs on the edges of the socket which engage in the slots 2 in the spigot. A sealing strip of non-hardening resilient material or mastic compound may be disposed between the spigot and socket.
