Abstract
911,767. Ventilating shoes. VAN RIJSWIJK, J. July 24, 1959 [Oct. 28, 1958], No. 25446/59. Class 17 (2). An insert sole 1 has a heel portion of elastic material with a compressible pumping chamber 3 and an air inlet, at the back of the sole, consisting of a short wide channel 5 with elastic walls, so that lifting of the heel of the wearer causes air to be drawn into the chamber through the inlet, whereas pressure of the heel closes the inlet and causes air to be pressed out of the chamber through a narrow protracted duct 9 to one or more outlets 8 near the front of the sole. As shown, sole 1 is formed of foam rubber &c. with a covering layer 2, and chamber 3 and cuts 9 &c. are formed as open channels in the undersurface of sole 1 and are closed by sole 4. Duct 9 connects with chamber 3 via a labyrinth of slots 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 which prevent reverse flow of air, and with openings 8 via slot 7.
