911,704. Nuclear fuel elements; cooling nuclear reactors. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. Nov. 25, 1959 [Nov. 25, 1958], No. 40004/59. Class 39 (4). In order to increase the rate of heat transfer from a solid body to a fluid flowing along the surface of the body, a guide member having an aerofoil cross-section is arranged in the path of the fluid, and orifices extend between the surfaces of the member. Fluid flows through the orifices towards the solid body, thus promoting turbulence. As shown, a nuclear fuel element sheath 4 has fins 5 and is surrounded by annular members 14 of aerofoil crosssection and having apertures 8. Alternatively, the annular members may surround a number of unfinned fuel elements, or the aerofoil member may be wound round the element as a helix (Fig. 8, not shown). The cooling fluid may be carbon dioxide or heavy water.
