Abstract

911,587. Primers. ELDH, J. A. D., and GUSTAFSSON, G. V. Nov. 24, 1960 [Nov. 24, 1959] No. 40452/60. Class 9 (1). A percussion primer comprises a capsule 1 containing an initiator layer 4 of an explosive such as dextrinated lead azide or mercury fulminate, a secondary layer 5 of an explosive such as tetryl or TNT and an anvil 3 situated between the layers 4, 5. A striker-pin 2 initiates the primer by striking the anvil 3, having passed through an aluminium or polythene foil 6 and the thin initiator layer 4 (a typical thickness of 0.5 mm. is given). According to the invention since the layer 4 is thin, deflagration will not occur as a result of the frictional heat produced by movement of the pin 2 through the layer, but only as the result of the impact between the pin and the anvil 3. If both are of steel superficial initiation results through the heat of impact and if both are of glass through heat of impact and heat-generated by high velocity splinters. Various materials such as brass, sintered metals, flint or ceramic may be used for either the pin or anvil and the impact energy required varies considerably depending on the combination chosen. A second embodiment involves an anvil of the same diameter as the capsule 1 with initiator layers both above and below it. The primers are suitable for shell impact fuzes and when constructed entirely of non-metallic parts for anti-tank mines.
