Abstract

911,358. Pipe couplings. VICTAULIC CO. Ltd. Sept. 11, 1961 [Sept. 13, 1960], No. 31485/60. Class 99(1). A divided housing 3, 4, e.g. of aluminium, adapted to be placed around the adjacent ends of two aligned pipes A, B is formed with an annular groove accommodating a sealing ring 1 and on at least one side of the ring with an annular recess 7 which tapers in radial depth in a direction away from the ring and accommodates with axial play a number of locking segments 8, the length of each segment being not more than 60 degrees of arc and the segments being distributed around the periphery of the recess and having outer surfaces cooperating with the sloping surface of the recess. When the parts of the housing are drawn together around a pair of pipes, the inner surfaces of the segments are forced into gripping engagement with one of the pipes, any subsequent movement of the pipe out of the housing causing relative axial movement between the locking segments and the housing so that the locking segments move inwardly into yet firmer engagement with the pipe. As shown, the segments have circumferentially extending grooves which provide sharp-edged teeth, are formed with axially elongated apertures and are held captive in the housing by bolts 9. In a modification, one side of the housing is formed with an annular rib to engage in a groove in one of the pipes.
