Abstract
911,136. Variable wire-wound resistors. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. June 19, 1961 [June 23, 1960], No. 22025/60. Class 37. A potentiometer comprises an annular casing, a helically-wound resistance wire supported by the inner surface of the casing, a rotatable screw-threaded spindle extending axially within the casing and a non-rotatable carriage engaging said spindle so as to be moved axially in response to rotation of spindle and carrying an electrical contact connecting the spindle and resistance wire. In Figs. 1 and 2, resistance wire 2 is wound on a rectangular former having a low melting-point or alternatively on a former of material which will not adhere to adhesive. The wire is then either coated with adhesive and placed within casing 1 or the casing moulded around the former, whereby the winding is secured to the casing. The former is then withdrawn or melted away. Electrical contact with the winding ends is provided by two metal rings 14, 15 provided with terminal leads 11, 12. A rotatable screw-threaded spindle 3 extends axially within the casing and can be rotated by screw-head 4. The other end of spindle 3 is supported by a spring-loaded ballbearing 5 which bears against surface 6. A carriage 7 of insulating material engages the thread of spindle 3 so that rotation of the spindle causes the carriage to move along the casing. Carriage 7 has a hole drilled in it such that two ball-bearings or metal caps 8, 9 forced apart by spring 10 make contact with the winding 2 and the spindle 3. An external connection 13 is made to the spindle 3 via metal plate 6. Casing 1 is illustrated as being square but may be of any cross-section, although a square or rectangular cross-section allows a plurality of potentiometers to be placed side by side. The casing may be enclosed in a metal can 16.
