The writing unit of a retractable ball-point pen is removable for replacement through a lateral slot in the barrel. The onepiece barrel 1 of the pen is open at both ends and adjacent to the rear end has two diametricallyopposed lateral slots 2, 3, the slot 2 being the wider and the longer of the two. The writing unit 4 is made of flexible material and is engaged at its rear end in a recess in a plunger 5 which is formed integrally with a pocket clip 6. The clip 6 projects through the slot 2 and at its junction with the plunger presents an abutment 8 which in the retracted position of the writing unit is held in contact with the rear end of the slot 2 by a retracting spring 10. On the opposite side of the plunger to the clip are formed a tooth 7 which projects through the slot 3 and an abutment 9. In order to project the unit 4 to writing position the operator presses downwards and inwards on a knurled portion 6<SP>1</SP> of the clip until the abutment 9 on the plunger engages with the rear end of the slot 3, in which position it is maintained by the spring 10. Inward pressure on the tooth 7 releases the abutment 9 and allows the parts to reassume the Fig. 1 position. The writing unit 4 is replaced when exhausted by pulling the clip 6 downwards and outwards until the whole of the plunger 5 passes out through the slot 2, this being allowed by the flexibility of the unit 4. The plunger 5 is then pulled rearwards to extract the unit 4 from the barrel 1. When a new writing unit has been mounted in the plunger the above operation is reversed and the pen reassembled.
