Abstract
An elastomer-forming composition comprises (1) a diorganopolysiloxane, (2) a filler, (3) a silicon material containing at least one Si-bonded OH group, (4) a silicon material containing at least one Si-bonded alkoxy radical, and (5) a boron-containing material. Siloxane (1) may be linear or cyclic and may contain saturated, unsaturated or halogenated hydrocarbon or cyanoalkyl radicals; ingredients (3) and (4) may be silanes, siloxanes, silicates or bis-silylarylenes, many examples of which are given; ingredient (5) may be a boric acid or an ester or metal salt or complex thereof, a boron hydride or complex thereof with a nitrogen compound or hydrocarbon, or a boron halide, many examples of which are also given; fillers (2) specified are C black, silicas (having particle sizes less than 500m m ), alkoxy surface-modified silicas, oxides of Fe, Ti, Zn and Al, Al and Zn silicates, lithopone, diatomaceous earth, CaCO3 and quartz; the fillers may be treated with silanes. Calcium or barium zirconate or calcium silicate may be added to neutralize the acidity of certain fillers. The ingredients are preferably used in amounts by weight of 0,05 to 10 parts of (5), and from 1 to 100 parts of (3) and (4) together, per 100 parts of (1). The compositions are cured by heating with organic peroxides. The mixture, without the curing agent, may be aged at room or elevated temperature, and then cured in known manner. In a typical Example (1), the preparation of ingredients (1), (3) and (4) is described, and these ingredients are then compounded with silica, boric acid and dichlorobenzoyl peroxide and heat cured. Uses: As pressure-sensitive adhesive elastomers for coating the surfaces of solid objects and for making tapes, laminates, gaskets, moulded articles and diaphragms.
