Abstract
Waste liquors from a wood pulping process, e.g. black or sulphite liquor, are atomized into a hot flue gas to produce a fine mist of liquid particles in the gas, then completely drying the mist at a temperature of 300 DEG -600 DEG C. to produce a reaction mixture comprising the flue gas, steam, and the liquor solids, and thereafter passing this reaction mixture to a separate reactor such as that described and claimed in Specification 909,865 where it is allowed to react at high temperature to form sodium carbonate and a combustible gas, which may contain inter alia carbon monoxide and dioxide, hydrogen, nitrogen, hydrogen sulphide, and steam. This gas may be burnt to provide the necessary heat for the process. The fine mist may be treated to obtain a further subdivision of the liquid particles, for example by passage through a Venturi, prior to the drying.
