Abstract

Side chain chlorination of the methyl groups in the 2 position in methyl pyridines or quinolines, which may also contain other methyl groups, is effected by reaction, at 40 DEG -80 DEG C., with chlorine in the presence of an inert solvent and also an agent for binding hydrochloric acid. Specified solvents are chloroform, carbon tetrachloride and trichlorethylene whilst carbonates and bicarbonates are examples of the acid binder. In examples 2-picoline; 2,3- and 2,6-lutidine; 2,4,6-collidine, and quinaldine are chlorinated. Monochlor compounds can be separated from di- and/or trichlor compounds by dissolution in acid.
