Abstract

909,050. Selective printing. CREED & CO. Ltd. March 30, 1961 [April 7, 1960], No. 11762/61. Class 100(4). In a high-speed printing-machine in which the print mechanism travels across the paper which is transversely fixed, the carriage-return time is eliminated by having two print heads SK1, SK2 e.g. element printers or type-wheels which travel in opposite directions. This means that while one head, say SK1, is moving in letter-space direction and forming characters in the process, the other SK2 is travelling in carriage return direction. By the time the left-hand print head has reached the centre of the paper the right-hand head has returned also to the centre and is immediately ready to form the characters for the remainder of the line when it moves left to right. When the righthand head has reached the end of the R.H. end of the line the first head SK1 is ready to print on the next succeeding line. The heads are traversed by a helically grooved shaft AW. Data is alternatively fed to either print head by an electronic control circuit which is switched over by, in the embodiment shown, a photoelectric device controlled by an apertured disc driven 180 degrees for each half-page travel of a print head. Alternatively mechaniclal magnetic or electrostatic means may be used to direct the data to the print head travelling in the letter-space direction. Line-spacing.-The paper is advanced continuously: to ensure that the line of printing is not on a slope the shaft AW is compensatingly inclined. When head SK2 reaches the end of one line the head SK1 has carriage-returned to the beginning of the line and in a position to record in the next succeeding line.
