Abstract

908,857. Nuclear fuel elements. ATOMENERGIKOMMISSIONEN. June 19, 1961 [June 28, 1960], No. 21991/61. Class 39 (4). A fuel element comprising fuel rods 3 stacked in a can 1 in which they are surrounded by a metallic heat exchange medium is made by loading the fuel rods 3 into the can 1 with the heat exchange medium interspersed between them, for example in the form of discs 4 and heating the cam 1 in order to melt the heat exchange medium. A compression device consisting of a connection disc 5 and a support 6 loaded by a spring 7 is connected to the upper end of the can 1, air being removed through a tube 8 leading to an air pump. To heat the can 1, it is pushed in the direction of the arrow 9 through a heating zone 10, e.g. a high-frequency coil, so that the discs 4 are melted successively. Owing to the pressure from the compression device and vibrations produced by a vibrator 11, the molten metal is forced out into the space between the can 1 and the fuel rods 3. The method is particularly suitable for use with ceramic fuel and suitable metallic heat exchange media are lead, tin, antimony and bismuth. If desired, a metal alloy, e.g. a sodium-potassium alloy with a melting point below room temperature can be used, in which case the filling of the can is effected at a temperature below this melting point.
