Abstract
908,681. Steam and gas turbine power plant. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. June 11, 1958 [June 11, 1957], No. 18405/57. Class 110 (3). A turbine power plant for ship propulsion comprises, Fig. 3, a main steam turbine 21 driving a slow speed wheel 10, connected to the propeller shaft 10<SP>1</SP>, through a clutch 7, a reduction pinion 11 and a pair of second pinions 13 engaging the wheel 10. For boost purposes an auxiliary gas turbine 22 may drive the wheel 10 through a clutch 23, gears 26, a self-synchronizing clutch 27 and a pinion 12. For manoeuvring, forward or astern, the clutches 7 and 23 are disengaged and motion from the turbine 22 is transmitted through a selected fluid coupling 24 or 25, the coupling 24 coupled to the gears 26 being filled for ahead manoeuvring and the coupling 25 coupled to gears 29 being filled for astern manoeuvring. During manoeuvring the clutch 27 is locked in engagement and a clutch 28 is engaged. In a modified plant, Fig. 5, utilizing a pair of main steam turbines and a pair of auxiliary gas turbines, only one steam turbine 1 and one gas turbine 3 being shown, however, since the plant is symmetrical about the axis of the shaft 10<SP>1</SP>, the turbine 3, when boosting, drives the wheel 10 through clutch 23, reduction gear 30, synchronizing clutch 5 and pinion 12. A lay shaft 32 constantly drives the impeller members 33 of the fluid couplings 24, 25 when the turbine 3 is in operation. For manoeuvring, clutches 7, 23 are disengaged and clutches 5 and 6<SP>1</SP> are engaged. For astern manoeuvring the coupling 25 is filled and completes a drive through gears 29 and clutches 6<SP>1</SP>, 5 to the pinion 12. For ahead manoeuvring the coupling 24 is fitted to complete a drive to the pinion 12 through the gear 30.
