In a rotary spit oven comprising a number of rotatable spit rods mounted on a powerrotated assembly, e.g. as described in Specification 908,645, the spit rods are connected to the assembly at one end by means of spigot and socket joints and at the other by drive-transmitting releasable catch mechanisms. As shown, the right-hand end of a spit rod 7 has a spherical ball 8 fitting detachably into a socket 9 in a boss 10 welded on a disc 6, which, together with a further coaxial disc 5, is rotated by a powerdriven shaft 4. Connection of the left-hand end of the spit rod 7 is effected by means of a sleeve 11 which engages over the end of a stub shaft 14 rotatably mounted in a bearing bush 15 welded to the disc 5, the ends of a diametric cross-pin 16 through the stub-shaft engaging in slots 17 in the left-hand end of the sleeve 11. Movement of the sleeve 11 is restricted by a grub-screw 12 sliding in a slot 13 and to allow transmission of the drive from a wheel 17a the right-hand end of the sleeve and the left-hand extremity of the rod 7 may be square sectioned; alternatively, both the shaft and rod ends and the entire sleeve 11 may be of square crosssection. With sleeve 11 slid back, the rod 7 can be swung clear and then withdrawn entirely to impale chickens, joints of meat, &c., which are held in position on the rod by slidable, clampable forks 22, 24. The rod is then replaced in the oven, the ball end being fixed in position first.
