Abstract
908,269. Magnetic holding devices. SHELLEY & PARTNERS Ltd., M. L. Aug. 26, 1960 [Aug. 26, 1959], No. 29171/59. Class 35. [Also in Group XVII] An apparatus for skin packaging magnetic metal articles, e.g. screws 14, comprises means for vacuum forming thermoplastic sheet material 11 on to articles positioned in a predetermined arrangement on a backing element 15 placed on a carrier plate 4 which may be rendered magnetic or non-magnetic at will. The machine comprises an open-topped box 2 having a sealing ring 3 mounted on a table 1, and within which the vertically moving carrier 4 is mounted. The box is connected through a conduit 5 with a vacuum source. A platform 6 supports a jig for arranging the articles. The carrier plate 4 may be magnetized by a solenoid or may comprise two superposed plates 17, 20, Fig. 3, the upper one 17 being of soft iron with ribs 18 of an insulating material, and the lower plate 20 of a permanently magnetic material and having ribs 22 of an insulating material, so that in the position shown in Fig. 3, the upper half 17 is magnetic, but by sliding the plates relatively to each other the upper plate may be made non-magnetic.
