Abstract
Organic acid fluorides are prepared by reacting a carboxylic acid with thionyl fluoride under substantially anhydrous and oxygen-free conditions. The reaction is preferably carried out at elevated temperature and pressure, those specified as being particularly desirable are 50 DEG C. to 200 DEG C. and 5 to 40 atmospheres. Examples describe the reaction using acetic and benzoic acids in an autoclave. Other acids which may be used include halo-substituted acetic acids, propionic acid, higher fatty acids and phthalic acid. The thionyl fluoride may be that obtained as a by-product in the reaction of the carboxylic acid fluoride RCOF with SF4 to produce a product of the formula RCF3.
