A potentiometer circuit for measuring small D.C. voltages employs a source of D.C. power controlled by a Zener diode so as to give a constant potential regardless of current in the circuit. Fig. 2 shows such a circuit wherein a battery 2 and a series resistor 6 is shunted by a Zener diode 7 and by a resistor R. The resulting output is applied across the fixed resistance elements I and II of a potentiometer having decimal tapping elements III and IV across which a small D.C. voltage to be measured is applied via a galvanometer 5. When the decimal elements III and IV have been adjusted to obtain a null reading of the galvanometer the value of the unknown D.C. is obtained by simple ratio from the potentiometer readings. A method of measuring small resistances is described in which a known resistance RK, Fig. 6, is connected in series with an unknown resistance RX and balance, indicated on galvanometer 5, obtained with a potentiometer circuit 1 by means of a voltage adjuster 13, the said potentiometer including a Zener diode controlled voltage source. After balance has been obtained a switch 14 is moved to couple the unknown resistance RX via the galvanometer to the adjustable tapping elements III and IV of the potentiometer and balance again obtained by adjusting the elements III and IV. The value of RX is again found by simple ratio from the potentiometer readings.
