Abstract

[1-(p-trimethyl ammonium n-propylamidesulphonyl phenyl)-3-(p-chlorophenyl)-pyrazoline] methyl sulphate is prepared by quaternising 1 - (p - dimethyl - amino-n-propylamidosulphonyl - phenyl) - 3 - (p-chlorophenyl) pyrazoline with dimethyl sulphate in a chlorobenzene solution at 80 DEG -95 DEG C. Specification 808,113 is referred to.ALSO:Fibrous materials, e.g. wool, cellulose acetate, polyamide and polyacrylonitrile fibres, are brightened by treating them with a di- or tri-aryl-pyrazoline compound containing a quaternary ammonium group. Suitable brightening agents, which are preferably applied from an aqueous bath, are 1,3-diphenyl- and 1,3,5-triphenyl pyrazoline compounds which contain a quaternary ammonium group bound to the 1- or 5-positioned phenyl radical either directly or via a bridge member, e.g. an alkylene, -O-alkylene, -SO2-alkylene or -SO2-NH-alkylene radical. The phenyl radicals may be further substituted by substituted or unsubstituted alkyl radicals or halogen atoms. Numerous examples of suitable brightening agents are given.
