Abstract
906,635. Magnetic brakes. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Aug. 7, 1959 [Aug. 8, 1958], No. 25487/58. Class 35. An eddy current brake magnet comprises an anisotropic permanent magnet 10 magnetized in a direction parallel to the disc 11, with isotropic end portions 12 to divert the flux through the disc, on the other side of which is a further ferromagnetic member 13. In alternative arrangements (Figs. 2 . . . 4, not shown), the ferromagnetic member 13 itself comprises a magnet assembly identical to that on the upper side of the disc, which assembly may be modified by the addition of anisotropic polepieces, possibly also permanently magnetized. The parts may be secured in a recess in a non-magnetic support 15 (Fig. 6a) by a cast filler 16. The upper and lower magnet parts may originally be combined, the slot 15c being cut after assembly. The magnet and end pieces may be of powdered materials, sintered together.
