Abstract
906,539. Accelerometers. PLESSEY CO. Ltd. March 26, 1959 [March 28, 1958], No. 10003/58. Class 40 (1). An accelerometer comprises a premagnetized magnetostrictive element provided with means for attachment to the body whose acceleration is to be measured and a mass attached to another point of the element so that accelerations are transmitted from the body to the mass via the magnetostrictive element, the resulting strain in the element being detected by a coil wound round a portion of the element, the magnetostrictive element forming a closed flux path for the coil. Figs. 2 and 3 show preferred forms of the device in each case the magnetostrictive element is shown shaded. The premagnetising field may be obtained by passing a D.C. through the sensing coil or by forming a part of the device, e.g. discs 10, in Fig. 3, from permanently magnetised material. The element is made of a ferrite material or a laminated ferromagnetic metal &c.
