Abstract

Copolymers of maleic anhydride and ethylene, styrene, isobutylene or acrylic ester are combined with di-substituted amines to produce maleimide salts of the general formula: <FORM:0906083/IV(a)/1> where R, R0 and R1 each represent a hydrogen atom or lower alkyl group, R2 an alkyl group, a monocyclic aryl group or a carbalkoxyl group, R3 and R4 a lower alkyl group or the elements of a piperidine or morpholine ring, R5 an alkylene group; y and z are greater than 10; 3y\sF3z\sF2y; 2z>2n>z; and X represents an organic or inorganic acid radical. To prepare a g -dimethylamino-propylmaleimidestyrene interpolymer, a styrene maleic anhydride interpolymer, in solution in dioxan, is added to a solution of g -dimethylaminopropylamine in dioxan. Acetic anhydride is then added to form the imide and the final product obtained by pouring into ether. A copolymer of styrene and g -dimethylaminopropylacrylamide is prepared by reacting the amide with azobisisobutyronitrile and stirring under nitrogen at 60 DEG C. Reference is made to the preparation of the copolymers of styrene and the amide by reaction of a styrene-methyl acrylate copolymer with g -dimethylaminopropylamine in a sealed vessel at 180 DEG -200 DEG C. A dye having the formula: <FORM:0906083/IV (b)/1> is prepared by diazotising 2-amino-p-benzene disulphonic acid and coupling with N-(b -naphthoyl) glycine. Other monoazo dyes are prepared by diazotising 4-amino-naphthalene sulphonic acid or m-methylsulphamylaniline and coupling with 1-(p-sulphophenyl)-3-carbethoxy-5-pyrazolone. Merocarbocyanine dyes are prepared by refluxing a mixture of 3-(3,5-disulphobenzamide)- 1-phenyl- 2-pyrazolin-5-one, di-potassium salt or 3-methyl-1-p-sulphophenyl- 2-pyrazolin-5-one, di-potassium salt and 2-b -acetanilidovinyl-3-ethyl-benzoxazolium iodide in ethyl alcohol.
