A hypodermic needle sharpening device comprises a base 2, a needle clamp 18 pivotally connected to the base, a removable abrasivecarrying member 14, Fig. 3, adjacent the needle clamp 18 and provision for effecting oscillatory movement between the clamp and abrasive inserts 17 on the member 14. In the embodiment of Figs. 1-3 the member 14 is oscillated relative to the fixed needle clamp by a motor 3 which drives a roller 10 eccentrically mounted on a disc 9 which is rotated by a pulley 5 and belt 6, the roller 10 engaging with a slotted member 16 to effect reciprocation of a shaft 13 to the opposite end of which the abrasivecarrying member 14 is removably secured by a finger-nut 15. The needle-clamp 18 comprises a spring-loaded V-block 23 and a fixed projection 20, Fig. 3, against which the needle is held; release is effected by a cam-lever 25, Fig. 1. The clamp is urged towards the member 14 by a spring 27. A spring-loaded catch 28 holds the clamp when in a retracted position. The driving-mechanism is enclosed by a cover 29. A bar 32 supports a magnifying glass for close examination of the needle tip under a shielded light 30 operated by a switch 31. The abrasive inserts 17 in the oscillating member 14 may have cylindrical or other shaped surfaces, as required. In the embodiment of Fig. 4 the needle clamp 18 is pivoted at 42 to a slide 38 mounted on bars 37 for manual operation, the finger-pieces 39 enabling the slide and needle clamp 18 to make lateral passes over an abrasive insert 17 on the member 14 which is removably supported by a bracket 41 on a rod 40.
