Abstract

905,650. Stuffing-boxes &c. LINDES EISMASCHINEN A.G. GES. FUR. Oct. 23, 1959 [Oct. 24, 1958], No. 35969/59. Class 122 (5). A shaft, for example the piston-rod 3 of a compressor, is sealed where it emerges from the cylinder 1 by means including a dry gland 5, an exhaust chamber 9 and a lubricated gland 13. The glands are separated by a substantially closed chamber 12 of sufficient length in the axial direction of the shaft to ensure that substantially no lubricant from the lubricated gland reaches the dry gland. The latter comprises chambers 6, 7 with spring ring packings. The chamber 9 is formed in a gland seat 8 and leads via a pipe 10 and a filter 11 to the compressor suction line. Lubricating oil is supplied by a pump (not shown) to the gland 13 through a pipe 15 and returned through a pipe 16, any oil leaking along the shaft being led via a pipe 17 and sight glass 19 to a collecting vessel 18 connected by a pipe 24 to the pipe 10; oil in the vessel 18 being returned to the suction side of the oil pump. An oil-retaining ring 14 is secured to the rod inside the chamber 12 which is provided with a window 22 and an inspection door 25. Oil leaking into a chamber 12 is drained via a pipe 20 to a further collecting vessel 21. The invention is stated to be applicable also to sealing rotary shafts.
