Abstract

905,643. Statistical apparatus. COMPAGNIE DES MACHINES BULL. April 21, 1960 [April 29, 1959], No. 14107/60. Class 106 (1). In a statistical machine the input to and output from an accumulator is by way of the same conductor and pluggable connections are made from this conductor to input and output means. Fig. 4 shows three accumulators TD, TI and TC, the first for accumulating debit values read from grouped cards sensed at LT, the second being shown to illustrate how a number of accumulators can be interconnected in a chain and the third accumulates credit values. For each accumulator there is a corresponding printer ID, II, and IC and a punch PD, PS and PC which print and punch on different areas of a list sheet and a summary card respectively. Cards are sensed at LT in succession, debit values being indicated by a control hole which when sensed, routes the data to the debit accumulator TD. Pluggable connections are shown by a full and a broken line together. The accumulators have a number of stages each of which is connected with corresponding stages of the other accumulators as shown. Input to each stage is in the form of a pulse train, the number of pulses being equal to the entered digit which are applied from conductor C1, C2 or C3 via contacts CE1, CE2, or CE3 to a stepping coil ETD, ETI or ETC to advance a switch arm. Upon read-out a similar pulse train is transmitted by the switch arm from the contact stud with which it is in engagement, via a contact bar BRD, BRI or BRC via contact CB1, CB2 or CB3 to conductor C1, C2 or C3. The read-out train may represent the real contents of the accumulator or the complement for subtraction. In operation contacts CRL, CR1 and CR2 are initially closed. For credit values contacts CE3 and CRC are closed to enter the values into the accumulator TC and the printer IC which prints on the credit side of the list. Sensing of a " debit hole " causes contacts CE1 and CRD to close instead to connect up the debit accumulator TD and debit printer ID. At the end of a card group contacts CR1 and CR2 open and contacts CB1, CRD and CRP close so that the contents of the debit accumulator are passed to printer ID to print the debit total and punch PD to punch it on the summary card. Contacts CB3, CRC and CPC close to transmit the contents of the credit accumulator to printer IC and punch PC. The balance is worked out by re-closing contacts CR1 and CR2 and closing contacts CB3 and CE1 so that the contents of the credit accumulator are read-out and entered in subtraction into the debit accumulator TD. If there is a debit balance contact CRD closes to allow it to be printed in the debit column of the list and contact CRS closes to punch it on the summary card together with a debit hole. A credit balance is passed to printer IC and again punched in punch PS but without the debit hole. Accumulator decades comprising relay chains may replace the selector switches and route switching may be by transistors or photo-resistant elements instead of by relays.
