Abstract
905,417. Aerials. DON-LAN ELECTRONICS Inc. Feb. 1, 1961 [Feb. 19, 1960], No. 3879/61. Class 40 (7). An aerial comprises a hollow conducting body 10 terminating at one end in a coaxial input connector 11 and at its other end in a sleeve coaxially aligned with the connector, the rear section 13 of a dielectric rod member being received by the sleeve and there being means to couple e.m. energy from the conductor to the rod within the body. The inner conductor 17 of the connector is bored to form a thermal expansion joint with a probe 19, one end of which fits into the bore. The other end of the probe is bent laterally to connect at 22 with the cylindrical wall of the hollow body. The end of the dielectric rod fitted into the body has a conductive coating which is extended to form a sector-shaped coating 24 on the base of the rod. The probe is inclined at a small angle A to the base so forming a capacitive coupling with the sector 24, the capacitance varying over the length of the laterally bent portion of the probe to form a coupling stated to be effective over a wide frequency range. Matching may be achieved by varying the capacitance by rotation of the rod, and thus the sector 24, relative to the probe. Rotation of the sector through 90 degrees to the position 24<SP>1</SP> indicated by dashed lines produces circularly polarized radiation. The end of the rod remote from the body tapers towards a point so that the rod functions as a dielectric lens to restrict the width of, and suppress side lobes in, the radiated beam. The directivity may be further enhanced by providing a series of conducting bands on the rod, Fig. 4 (not shown), whose width and spacing decreases towards the point of the rod, or by the provision on a common axis of a number of dielectric rods whose diameters decrease towards the point, each fitting in a conductively lined cavity in its predecessor in a sequence nearer the body 10, Fig. 5 (not shown).
