Abstract

905,302. Feeding webs. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. June 30, 1961 [Oct. 17, 1960], No. 23681/61. Class 100 (1). [Also in Group XXXVIII] A record tape guide comprises a channel slightly larger than the cross-section of the tape 1 with an orifice 13 through which air is forced under pressure which maintains the tape spaced from the base 12 of the channel by an amount of the order of the tape thickness. The side-walls 10, 11 are so proportioned as to leave air-gaps at the sides of the tape which are equal at equilibrium and each of the same order of size as the tape/base spacing. Should the tape drift, e.g. to the left, it is re-centred by the combination of excess viscous drag to the right (Fig. 5) due to the larger air-flow toward the wider exit gap and by the rightwardly-directed component of the pressure of the air on the tilted under-face of the tape as represented by the length of the arrows in Figs. 6, 7, which indicate the conditions obtaining with tapes able to bend, as shown.
