Abstract
A process of producing steel from a pig iron containing more than 0.30% phosphorus by a top blowing method comprises the following stages:-Stage 1.-Pure oxygen is blown on to or into the melt through a lance held at a constant height above the surface. Stage 2.-Top blowing is continued using a lime-oxygen suspension while the tip of the lance is gradually lowered; the bath is then deslagged and Stage 3.-Top blowing is continued with oxygen containing a finely divided alkaline earth compound. Lime may be suspended in the oxygen blast during stage 1 in addition to slag forming materials added to the bath before blowing. The oxygen lance may be inclined from the vertical to promote foaming of the slag after which it is moved to the vertical position. During the second stage the lance may be moved slowly and steadily downwards or may be lowered and raised each minute resulting in a downward movement of 0.05 to 0.10 m. per minute. After deslagging preceding the third stage silica may be added before or with the alkaline earth compound. Specifications 745,205, 789,892 and 844,987 are referred to.
