Abstract

A process for providing temporary protection for easily marred surfaces, e.g. polished aluminium sheet or phenolic resin laminates, comprises applying to the surface an aqueous emulsion or dispersion comprising a major proportion of an alkali-soluble copolymer of vinyl acetate and a copolymerizable unsaturated carboxylic acid and a minor proportion of a plasticizer for the copolymer and then drying the coated surface. The coating may be applied by brushing or spraying and may be removed by a mildly alkaline aqueous solution, e.g. detergent solution. The plasticizer may be dibutyl or dioctyl phthalate, tricresyl phosphate or polypropylene adipate. The composition may include a vinyl alcohol polymer. In Example I the coating composition consists of water, Emulsion VS 155 (copolymer of vinyl acetate and crotonic acid), 50/88 "Moviol" (Registered Trade Mark), (polyvinyl acetate polymer) and dibutyl phthalate; in Example II it consists of water, "Moviol" (Registered Trade Mark), "Vinamul" (Registered Trade Mark),(copolymer of vinyl acetate and unsaturated carboxylic acid) and dioctyl phthalate.ALSO:A composition comprises an aqueous emulsion or dispersion comprising a major proportion of an alkali-soluble copolymer of vinyl acetate and an unsaturated carboxylic acid and a minor proportion of a plasticizer for the copolymer. The plasticizer may be dibutyl or dioctyl phthalate, tricresyl phosphate or polypropylene adipate. A vinyl alcohol polymer may be present in the composition. In Example I the composition consists of water, Emulsion VS 155 (copolymer of vinyl acetate and crotonic acid) 50/88 "Moviol" (Registered Trade Mark), polyvinyl acetate polymer) and dibutyl phthalate; in Example II it consists of water, "Moviol" (Registered Trade Mark), "Vinamul" (Registered Trade Mark), (copolymer of vinyl acetate and unsaturated carboxylic acid) and dioctyl phthalate.
