Abstract
A material having an aggregate density of not less than 12 gm./c.c. and particularly for use as a screen for harmful radiations or as a counterweight or balancing material consists of tungsten particles mechanically retained in a matrix of lead or lead alloy. The material may be made by one of the following methods: (1) pressing a homogeneous mixture of tungsten and lead particles preferably with simultaneous heating; (2) heating a homogeneous mixture of tungsten and lead particles to melt the lead and then allowing the binder to solidify; (3) introducing powdered tungsten into molten lead so that the powder particles contact each other and then allowing the binder to solidify; (4) in filtrating a loose mass of tungsten particles with molten lead. Lead alloy may replace the lead in each of the above methods.
