Abstract

An aqueous phosphating solution, particularly for coating iron and steel, contains 1-15 g./l. of zinc and/or manganese phosphates and one or more nitrogen-containing phosphoric acid derivatives having one or more amido-and/or imido-groups and/or water-soluble salts thereof. Specified derivatives are monoamido-and diamido-phosphoric acid, imido-diphosphoric acid, polyimido-phosphoric acid and phosphoryltriamide. The solution may contain accelerators such as nitrates, chlorates and percompounds (e.g. hydrogen peroxide, or perphosphates, perborates or ammonium persulphate together with acid to maintain the pH of the solution constant). Suitable proportions are 0.01-10 g./l. of phosphoric acid derivative and peroxide (calculated as H2O2) in an amount of 1/30 to 1/8 the amount of coating metal. The solution preferably is supersaturated in respect of coating metal and has a pH exceeding the pH of equilibrium, stabilized, if desired, by buffers such as sodium and/or zinc acetate. In one Example (8), the phosphate coating is treated in chromic acid solution. German Specifications 715,540 and 931,520 are referred to.
