Abstract

902,827. Etching and anodizing aluminium, electrolytically. BRITISH ALUMINIUM CO. Ltd. Feb. 8, 1960 [Feb. 20, 1959], No. 6015/59. Class 41. An aluminium or aluminium alloy surface is etched anodically with an electrolyte using interrupted pulses of unidirectional current of frequency 20 c.p.s. to 6 k.c.p.s., a current density of 3 to 5 A.S. cm., and each pulse of 5 to 100Á sees. duration. The preferred electrolyte contains halides or nitrates of alkali metals, ammonia or magnesium. It is stated that the active surface is increased 10 times for a loss of about 10% of metal. The etched surface may then be washed and formed using boric acid or an alkali borate solution. In examples, aluminium foil after cleaning in caustic soda is etched using a 15% solution of NaCl, MgCl 2 , KNO 3 or NaNO 3 for 2 to 15 mins. at 20‹ to 40‹ C. and at 15 volts, 20 Á sees. duration and a repetition frequency of 66 c.p.s. The foil is then washed and treated with 2% H 3 BO 3 solution containing a little sodium borate at 460 volts.
