Abstract
902,572. Semi-conductor devices. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Oct. 17, 1958 [Nov. 21, 1957], No. 33213/58. Drawings to Specification. Addition to 852,963. Class 37. [Also in Group II] An X-ray sensitive photo-conductive target comprises a layer of orthorhombic lead oxide separated from a mounting plate formed of or coated with stainless steel, nickel, chromium or copper or alloys thereof by a layer of the oxide of said plate or coating metal. In one embodiment a plate of aluminium is provided with a film of stainless steel bonded thereto by spraying, electroplating or rolling. Lead oxide is vaporized on to the mounting plate at a temperature of 360-380‹ C. in an atmosphere of dry oxygen at 3-5 Á pressure. The plate is then slowly cooled and subsequently baked in air for 90 minutes at 600‹ C. to convert the oxide to the orthorhombic form and simultaneously to form a conducting oxide layer on the stainless steel surface. The vaporization and baking processes are then repeated to provide a thicker layer of orthorhombic lead oxide. Stainless steel is the most suitable metal for the mounting plate or layer since its expansion coefficient closely matches that of the lead oxide layer.
