Abstract
A process for the reduction of the pour point of a petroleum gas oil distillate by catalytic hydrogenation comprises hydrogenating the distillate (which has a pour point higher than 0 DEG F. and a viscosity lower than 10 centistokes at 100 DEG F.) in the presence of a catalyst comprising oxides of metals of Group VI and VIII supported on a mixed silica-alumina base (the silica content of the catalyst being less than 40% of the total weight of the catalyst) at a temperature from 400 DEG to 450 DEG C. (but below the temperature at which substantial cracking of the distillate occurs) and at a pressure from 5 to 100 kg./cm2 (but above the equilibrium pressure at which the amount of hydrogen evolved in the reaction is equal to the amount of hydrogen consumed), with a hydrogen recycling rate of at most 15 mols. of hydrogen per average mol. of charge and a charge delivery rate of 0,5 to 10 v./v./hr. The catalyst preferably comprises oxides of cobalt and molybdenum supported on silica-alumina. The product of the process comprises mainly a fraction whose initial boiling point is identical with that of the starting material but which has, with respect to the latter, a lower pour point as well as a reduced sulphur content and a higher Diesel Index. The total reaction product may be separated by distillation into various fractions, for example (1) a gas oil fraction the cut point of which is set so that the fraction conforms to gas oil specifications, particularly as regards the flash point and pour point, and (2) a petrol fraction which can either be used as such or preferably as a charge to a reforming process. Specification 749,850 is referred to.
