Abstract

New copolyesters, suitable for the manufacture of films and mouldings, contain the residues of (1) bis-phenol A, (2) orthophthalic acid and (3) isophthalic and/or terephthalic acids; the number of orthophthalate residues forming from 15 to 85% of the total number of phthalate residues present in the copolyester. The copolyester may be made by reacting (a) An aqueous solution p of a di-alkali metal salt of bis-phenol A with the acid chlorides or bromides in an organic solvent which may dissolve the copolyester, possibly in the presence of a quarternary ammonium compound as catalyst and an emulsifying agent; (b) Bis-phenol A with the dimethyl or diethyl esters of the acids in the presence of a polymethylene glycol containing 2-10 carbon atoms and an esterinterchange catalyst; or (3) Bis-phenol A and the diphenyl esters of the acid. The molecular weight of the copolyester may be increased by (i) Heating it in powder form just below its sintering temperature or heating it above its melting point in vacuo or (ii) Reacting it with a difunctional isocyanate or isothiocyanate. Ancillary agents such as plasticizers, stabilizers, fillers, dyes and pigments may be added to the copolyester. Before use the polyesters are carefully dried.
